In many urban high schools that are experiencing issues with students out of control, traditional methods of dealing with the problems only make matters worse. Students who have spent multiple years in 9th grade need a special focus to change their attitudes and their actions.
The Twilight Academy operating in late afternoon hours provides such a program for these students. Isolated from the rest of the students in a small academy situation with smaller classes and a nagging and nurturing environment allows these students to focus on their goals instead of the distractions in the day school programs.
Implemented in numerous schools in Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City results have shown major decreases in all levels of suspensions and very significant increases in credit accumulation for the students. This program can be implemented quickly and successfully given a serious commitment from the school staff.
